  16. <p>Seven firms are found negligent in a complex Maryland trial
  17. </p>
  18. <p>    With tens of thousands of asbestos cases pending in U.S.
  19. courts, a Maryland judge two years ago sought to ease the
  20. backlog by consolidating more than 8,500 claims of negligence
  21. and liability. Now the first and most significant phase of the
  22. nation's single largest asbestos trial has ended with a big
  23. victory for the plaintiffs. After 12 hours of deliberation, a
  24. jury found seven companies liable for manufacturing asbestos
  25. products that they knew or should have known were dangerous to
  26. workers handling them.

  28. <p>    Asbestos, a mineral once widely used for insulation and
  29. fireproofing, has been linked to fatal respiratory illnesses.
  30. The plaintiffs' attorneys argued that information on the health
  31. effects of asbestos was available to the industry decades before
  32. the issue gained attention in the late 1960s.
  33. </p>
  34. <p>    In the next phase of the trial, the jury will decide
  35. whether the companies are liable for compensatory and punitive
  36. damages; then a series of smaller trials will determine
  37. individual awards. Despite the obstacles ahead, attorneys are
  38. confident that compensation is at last in sight for the 8,500
  39. Maryland plaintiffs. But thousands of others suffering from
  40. asbestos-related diseases may never live to receive the
  41. compensation they have pursued so painfully.
